A touch of Parisian chic in the heart of Valencia city, is that possible? Yes, it is. In this blog, we would like to introduce you to Pla del Remei: one of the most chic neighbourhoods in the city and part of the Eixample district, which also includes Ruzafa and Gran Vía. The stately façades and elegant balconies, combined with the boutique shops, are reminiscent of the 7th arrondissement of Paris. There is only one major difference and advantage: it is right under the Spanish sun!
Pla del Remei, a quiet neighbourhood right in the city centre
While Ruzafa is best known for its creative and lively character, Pla del Remei is all about tranquillity, class and elegance. Think of the grandeur of Salamanca in Madrid, but on a Valencian scale.

Yet the neighbourhood is located right in the centre of Valencia. It borders directly on Calle Colón, the city’s largest and most commercial shopping street. It’s almost a miracle how peaceful it feels as soon as you walk into the neighbourhood. But it’s certainly not boring: Pla del Remei also has its own (designer) shops, coffee bars, restaurants and boutiques. In addition, you will find various art galleries and stylish home furnishing shops. It is an ideal place to start a day of shopping in Valencia.
One of the neighbourhood’s most famous landmarks is Mercado de Colón, a beautifully renovated market hall with cafés, restaurants and bars, and a few stalls run by local vendors during the day. The Basílica de Sant Vicent Ferrer, with its tall, decorated towers, is also a striking landmark in the neighbourhood.

History of Pla del Remei
Pla del Remei, together with Gran Vía and Ruzafa, forms the ‘Eixample’ district. Literally, this means ‘extension’. This district came into being when Valencia expanded beyond its old city walls in the early 20th century. Traces of that period are still visible today, although many buildings date from between 1900 and 1930, with clear influences from Valencian modernism: decorative facades, wrought-iron balconies and traditional tiling.

From the outset, the neighbourhood was designed as a residential area for the wealthy middle class. This explains its luxurious appearance, which is still evident today and is not only visible from the outside. As soon as you enter one of the buildings, you will notice the classic entrances, and the apartments are often more spacious and have high ceilings.
The name of the neighbourhood, Pla del Remei, literally means “Field of Redemption”. It refers to the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Remedio, a historic church located in the centre of the neighbourhood. The veneration of the Virgin of Redemption (Virgen del Remedio) played an important role in Valencia for centuries and lives on symbolically in this neighbourhood.
